A denoising scheme is presented suitable for magnetic exploration data. It is based on an empirical study and combines the shift invariant denoising method with the use of a variable threshold, which is calculated in each cycle of the shift invariant algorithm. The calculation of each threshold is based on the wavelet transformation of random noise with the same standard deviation as in the data. The scheme is particularly useful in “archaeological geophysics” where it is important to produce results that mostly resemble the plane view of the buried objects.
